Money for Tobacco


The University of Southern Mississippi has recently created a new policy on January 1, 2018 that supports the campaign of a tobacco free campus. The new policy consists of Smoking and the use of tobacco are prohibited in or on all University owned, operated or leased property including vehicles. The current status of this change is effective. The University of Southern Miss is not the only school going tobacco free. Other schools like Jackson State University, Mississippi Valley State University, Hinds Community College, Tougaloo College, Alcorn State University, Coahoma, Community College, and Rust College.

Other than the Universities and colleges care about the students health the schools have an opportunity to receive some wealth. A grant was created by the CVS health foundation for schools in Mississippi going tobacco free on September 20,2017. The support of a total of 12 Million in grants from CVS health

foundation in partnership with American cancer Society and truth initiative went to those schools listed.

The University made a statement of why they decided to go tobacco free by simply stating under it’s mission “By becoming tobacco-free, The University of Southern Mississippi and its constituents will further the mission of wellness and send a clear message of USM’s commitment to a healthy lifestyle.” The University of Southern Miss is a small group of people compared to everyone in the state. Mississippi has come up with

“Cigarette smoking among adults in Mississippi was 22.6%. Nationally, the prevalence of cigarette smoking among adults was 17.5%,”according to truthinitiative.org. On July 1, 2006, all government buildings in Mississippi became smoke free according to no-smoke.org. More than 20 communities in Mississippi followed this act as well as restaurants and bars. Mississippi has had many programs in efforts to stop smoking. The RAT commercials are one of the many popular familiar slogans, “Reject all Tobacco.” Mississippi created this commercial to get the attention of younger audiences. Houston Texas on August 22, 2016 decided to come up with similar laws as Mississippi and ban smoking within 25 feet of the door entrances of public buildings. Smoking has so many bad end results for not only the smoker but the people around them as well. These smaller particles can make their way into the lungs much easier than mainstream smoke can. The next issue would be how effective are e-cigarettes. E-cigarettes release a vapor by heating a solution containing water, nicotine, propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin and usually some flavoring.

The article says the damage of electric smoking can be less than 5% of the damage caused by smoking cigarettes containing tobacco.
